309LMo SAW and flux are high-alloy stainless-steel filler materials designed for submerged-arc welding (SAW) or flux-cored welding of stainless steel to carbon or low-alloy steels, as well as for overlay and surfacing applications requiring enhanced corrosion resistance. The deposited weld metal typically contains 23–25% chromium, 12–14% nickel, and 2–3% molybdenum, with very low carbon (~0.03–0.04%) to minimize carbide precipitation and maintain intergranular corrosion resistance. These consumables provide smooth, stable welds with excellent arc control and low spatter.

Mechanically, 309LMo weld deposits offer high tensile strength (~620 MPa), good yield strength (~440 MPa), and substantial elongation (~42%). The addition of molybdenum significantly improves resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion, while the alloy tolerates dilution from carbon or low-alloy base metals, reducing the risk of cracking. The flux ensures proper slag coverage, arc stability, and efficient weld bead formation, making it suitable for both flat and out-of-position welding.

Alloy 309LMo SAW and Flux Uses

309LMo SAW and flux are widely used for welding dissimilar metals, cladding or overlaying carbon or low-alloy steels, and providing buffer layers before applying more corrosion-resistant welds. Typical applications include pressure vessels, piping systems, chemical and petrochemical equipment, marine and offshore components, furnace and boiler parts, and general industrial fabrication or repair projects. Its combination of corrosion resistance, high mechanical strength, and weldability makes it ideal for demanding industrial and maintenance welding operations.
